Punctuality and regular attendance at school are encouraged and are an important aspect in a child’s sustained and regular progress. If for any reason a child is absent from school, parents are asked to contact the school office as soon as possible and to leave a message on the answerphone if it is outside of school hours. Daily checks will ensure that if the school has not heard from the parent, they will be phoned to find out why the child is absent.
Government guidelines dictate that head teachers should only authorise leave of absence in exceptional circumstances. If a head teacher grants a leave request, it will be for the head teacher to determine the length of time that the child can be away from school. Leave is unlikely, however, to be granted for the purposes of a family holiday as a norm.
Parents must complete a holiday notification form before taking their child out of school, with as much notice as possible. Unless the circumstances are exceptional, the register must reflect all holidays in term time as unauthorised.
The Headteacher monitors pupil attendance each month to ensure each child receives their full entitlement to the National Curriculum. In addition to this, the school’s Education Welfare Officer, visits once a term to investigate any children with poor attendance.
